Surah Sad Ayat 21-22-23 Translation Tafseer

Para 23 - وَ مَا لِیَ

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ

38.21-22-23

وَ هَلْ اَتٰىكَ نَبَؤُا الْخَصْمِۘ-اِذْ تَسَوَّرُوا الْمِحْرَابَۙ (21) اِذْ دَخَلُوْا عَلٰى دَاوٗدَ فَفَزِعَ مِنْهُمْ قَالُوْا لَا تَخَفْۚ-خَصْمٰنِ بَغٰى بَعْضُنَا عَلٰى بَعْضٍ فَاحْكُمْ بَیْنَنَا بِالْحَقِّ وَ لَا تُشْطِطْ وَ اهْدِنَاۤ اِلٰى سَوَآءِ الصِّرَاطِ(22) اِنَّ هٰذَاۤ اَخِیْ- لَهٗ تِسْعٌ وَّ تِسْعُوْنَ نَعْجَةً وَّلِیَ نَعْجَةٌ وَّاحِدَةٌ- فَقَالَ اَكْفِلْنِیْهَا وَ عَزَّنِیْ فِی الْخِطَابِ(23)

Kanz-ul-Irfan

And did news come to you of the claimants when they climbed over ˹the wall˺ and entered the prayer chamber? [1] When they approached Dāwūd, he was in awe of them, [1] they said, “Fear not. We are two claimants, one of us has transgressed against the other so judge between us with the truth and do not oppose the truth, and guide us to the straight path. Indeed, this is my brother; he has ninety-nine ewes[1] and I have a single ewe. Now he says, ‘Give it to me.’ And he has compelled me through speech.”

Commentary

According to the widely accepted opinion, these were angels who came to test Prophet Dāwūd عَـلَيْـهِ الـسَّـلَام.

It was natural for Prophet Dāwūd عَـلَيْـهِ الـسَّـلَام to be shocked when he saw people leaping over the wall. Those who unexpectedly enter usually come with ill intentions, and so instinctively being shocked is not incompatible with prophethood.
